Caroline’s younger sister, Megan, had avoided the event because she disliked Lenora.
Afterward, she came to see me.
She brought a folder.
“Caroline wrote this during adoption.”
Inside:
Notes.
Not legal.
Personal.
One line:
If anybody ever says Elsie is less ours, Dominic will probably commit a felony.
I laughed for the first time in days.
Megan smiled.
“She knew you.”
Then another line:
My job is to make sure he doesn’t teach Elsie that love means destroying people who insult you.
The laughter stopped.
Caroline had known me too well.
Megan said:
“You’re making the portrait into a war.”
“I’m correcting the book.”
“Yes.”
“The foundation.”
“Yes.”
“Lenora.”
“Yes.”
“What am I doing wrong?”
“You talk about proving Elsie belongs.”
I stared.
Megan continued.
“She already does.”
That sentence changed my posture.
