Chapter 15 - ELSIE REFUSES AVERY HALL
For three months, Elsie did not want to return.
“Picture house?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
We did not force.
The foundation sent her a children’s invitation to a holiday craft day.
I almost threw it away.
Then asked her.
“No.”
Fine.
Another month.
School trip scheduled to visit the small museum.
Her teacher called.
“We can choose another parent chaperone if you prefer.”
I wanted to keep her home.
Dr. Mills said:
“Whose fear?”
Mine.
Elsie said:
“Is Aunt Lenora there?”
“No.”
“Gideon?”
“No.”
“Picture?”
“Some.”
She thought.
“Can Daddy come?”
I could.
So I did.
She visited the museum.
Looked at old shoes.
Old letters.
A toy train that belonged to some dead cousin in 1911.
Then stopped at a temporary wall showing the anniversary book correction process.
No image of the abusive incident.
Good.
A small caption said:
The 125th anniversary edition was revised to reflect the foundation’s family-history standards and complete legal family records.
Boring.
Perfect.
Elsie ignored it.
