Chapter 3 - THE CHILD BETWEEN GIANNA AND THE FORTUNE
Dominic Baron’s reputation was built from two worlds.
The public world contained shipping companies, restaurants, real estate, and private security contracts.
The hidden world contained debts collected through fear, alliances enforced through violence, and men whose loyalty depended on believing Dominic could reach anyone.
Marco inherited rights in only the legitimate world.
His mother had made certain of it.
Elena Moretti Baron came from a family that understood what powerful men called protection.
Before marrying Dominic, she created the Marco Baron Heritage Trust.
Her inherited properties, investment accounts, and a thirty-one-percent interest in Baron Maritime Holdings passed directly to Marco.
Dominic served as temporary guardian but could not sell, mortgage, or transfer the assets.
An independent bank managed the principal.
If Dominic remarried, his spouse gained no control over Marco’s trust.
If Marco died before adulthood, the assets did not return to Dominic.
They transferred to the Elena Moretti Children’s Foundation and three protected relatives.
Gianna would receive nothing.
That should have removed financial motive.
Instead, it created another one.
Gianna believed Dominic’s marriage agreement could merge selected Baron voting rights with her family’s European shipping network.
Her father’s companies were collapsing beneath hidden debt.
A merger would save them.
But the independent trustees refused to approve any restructuring that reduced Marco’s future voting position.
Marco did not need to make decisions at seven.
His existence required the adults to preserve his rights.
Gianna began pressing Dominic to challenge Elena’s trust.
“It prevents the family from moving forward,” she told him.
“It protects my son.”
“It protects a dead woman’s suspicion.”
“Elena wrote it because she knew my world.”
“And you are allowing her to control our marriage.”
Dominic ended the discussion.
Gianna did not.
Three months before the garden, she contacted Victor Sanz, an attorney who once worked for the Baron family.
Victor had been dismissed after using client funds to cover gambling debts.
Gianna offered to restore his position if he helped create a path around the trust.
The plan required two documents.
First, a declaration that Marco suffered serious behavioral instability and could not safely remain at the estate.
Second, a petition claiming Dominic’s criminal exposure made him unsuitable to manage the child’s interests.
Gianna would present herself as the stable prospective stepmother.
If granted temporary guardianship, she could request authority over distributions for Marco’s care.
She still could not own the trust.
But she could direct millions toward facilities, security companies, and international schools controlled by her family.
Victor explained that courts would require evidence.
Gianna began producing it.
She reported that Marco attacked staff.
No staff confirmed it.
She said he threatened to burn the mansion.
The matches found beneath his bed carried Gianna’s fingerprints.
She claimed he ran away twice.
Estate gate records showed her security code opened the side exit during both incidents.
Dominic received filtered summaries because Gianna intercepted household reports before they reached him.
Rosa noticed changes.
Marco stopped eating meals when Gianna sat near him.
He asked whether children could be sent to countries where fathers could not find them.
He began sleeping with a chair beneath his door handle.
Rosa told Dominic.
He questioned Gianna.
She cried and said Marco resented their engagement.
Dominic believed the explanation because it reflected his guilt.
He had loved Elena.
He feared Marco would interpret any future marriage as replacement.
Gianna turned that fear into camouflage.
The memory card inside Marco’s notebook contained audio recorded through a small tablet.
One file captured Gianna speaking with Victor in the library.
VICTOR: Residential placement creates control, not ownership.
GIANNA: Control is enough until Dominic signs the merger.
VICTOR: Marco will return eventually.
GIANNA: Children disappear inside systems every day.
VICTOR: You cannot say things like that.
GIANNA: Then stop recording your meetings.
Victor laughed.
He did not know Marco’s tablet sat beneath the library sofa after the boy left it there during a lesson.
Another file captured Gianna alone with Marco.
GIANNA: Your father will have a new family.
MARCO: I am his family.
GIANNA: For now.
MARCO: Rosa says dads do not stop being dads.
GIANNA: Rosa is a servant.
MARCO: She loves me.
GIANNA: That makes her replaceable too.
The final recording occurred the morning of the garden.
Gianna asked Marco to meet her near the cypress hedge.
She said she had found a box containing letters from Elena.
Marco agreed.
Before leaving his room, he activated the tablet’s voice recorder and slipped the memory card into the notebook.
The tablet itself was found smashed beneath the garden compost bin.
