Chapter 2 - THE BOY WHO CAME BACK FROM THE GARDEN

Paramedics treated Marco beneath the covered terrace before moving him.

He was conscious but dangerously cold.

His breathing remained shallow.

Loose soil covered his hair, ears, and clothing.

One paramedic placed oxygen over his face while another checked his neck, ribs, pupils, and blood pressure.

“How long was he beneath the soil?” the team leader asked.

Rosa looked at Gianna.

“I do not know.”

Gianna folded both arms.

“He fell into the trench.”

Dominic stared at her.

“And buried himself?”

“The rain collapsed the soil.”

“Why did you threaten Rosa?”

“I panicked.”

“Why was the shovel in the grass?”

“The gardeners left it.”

The estate’s head gardener had gone home three hours earlier.

The crew stored tools inside a locked shed.

The shovel beside the trench belonged to the mansion kitchen garden.

Rosa used it for compost.

Gianna had seen her carrying it that morning.

Marco’s oxygen level improved slightly.

He caught Dominic’s sleeve.

“She said you wanted me gone.”

Dominic leaned close.

“Who?”

Marco’s eyes moved toward Gianna.

The paramedic gently interrupted.

“Do not question him now. He needs to conserve his breathing.”

Dominic nodded immediately.

For once, command belonged to someone else.

At St. Vincent Children’s Hospital, doctors treated hypothermia, dehydration, bruising around Marco’s wrists, and respiratory irritation from inhaled soil.

Imaging showed no major spinal injury.

His left ankle was sprained.

There were scratches along his face and neck but no life-threatening wound from the digging itself.

Dr. Leah Hammond spoke carefully.

“Your son was extremely fortunate.”

Dominic stood beside the consultation-room window.

“Will his lungs recover?”

“We expect them to, but we are monitoring for inflammation and infection.”

“How long was he buried?”

“We cannot determine an exact time medically. Based on his temperature, condition, and the call timeline, investigators may be able to estimate it.”

“Was he drugged?”

“Initial testing suggests a sedating antihistamine. Confirmatory results are pending.”

“Would that stop him from fighting?”

“It could make him drowsy and weak.”

Rosa sat in the corner with mud dried beneath her nails.

Her hands had been cleaned and bandaged where small stones cut the skin.

Dominic looked toward her.

“You saved him.”

“I heard him.”

“Everyone else was inside.”

“I was supposed to be inside too.”

He understood the meaning.

Gianna had counted on obedience.

Police separated witnesses.

Because the Baron name carried a long history of intimidation, the state police—not the estate’s familiar local contacts—took control of the scene.

Dominic did not call politicians.

He did not ask anyone to alter reports.

He surrendered Rosa’s phone voluntarily after investigators copied the live call.

The recording contained Gianna’s threat.

Walk away, or you disappear too.

It also captured Marco’s voice beneath the earth and Dominic instructing security not to touch Gianna.

Gianna’s attorney arrived before midnight.

She claimed Rosa had staged the scene to prevent the marriage.

According to her statement, Marco had been playing near the drainage trench when the side collapsed. Gianna said she ran for help, returned, and found Rosa accusing her.

Detective Elena Brooks placed several photographs on the interview table.

Gianna’s diamond ring was recovered twelve inches beneath the loose soil near Marco’s shoulder.

Her fingerprints were found on the shovel handle.

Mud from the trench covered the inside of her shoes.

“Did you enter the trench?” Elena asked.

“I tried to help.”

“Why did Rosa find you inside the mansion?”

“I went to call someone.”

“Your phone records show no call.”

“I changed clothes.”

“Before calling an ambulance?”

Gianna said nothing.

The estate cameras should have answered more.

They did not.

Every camera covering the East Garden stopped recording at 3:42 p.m.

The system resumed at 4:31.

Rosa found Marco at 4:18.

Gianna knew the security code.

Dominic had given it to her two weeks earlier while discussing wedding arrangements.

The recorder showed her account entered the system at 3:41.

She claimed Dominic asked her to test privacy settings.

He denied it.

Police recovered Marco’s blue sneaker, a broken silver chain from Gianna’s bracelet, and fibers from her dress inside the trench.

Those facts placed her near him.

They did not yet explain why.

The answer waited inside a place Gianna believed no child understood.

Marco’s bedroom.

Under his mattress, investigators found a red notebook.

Most pages contained drawings of fish, motorcycles, and the dog he wanted but Dominic had not allowed him to adopt.

The final pages showed Gianna beside an open hole.

On one page, she held papers over a candle.

On another, Marco drew himself inside a dark square with the words:

IF I GO AWAY SHE GETS THE HOUSE.

May you like

Taped beneath the back cover was a small memory card.

Marco had begun collecting evidence before anyone realized he was afraid.
