Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BENEATH THE RAIN

Rosa Medina heard the breathing before she saw the hand.

Rain hammered the East Garden of the Baron estate, flattening flowers and turning the newly disturbed soil into dark mud.

She had come outside because Gianna Kanti entered the mansion through the rear doors with dirt beneath her fingernails.

That alone was unusual.

Gianna did not touch anything she could instruct another person to touch.

She wore silk inside the house, gloves near the roses, and an expression suggesting the world existed to remain clean beneath her feet.

Yet that afternoon, mud streaked the hem of her green dress.

Her diamond ring was missing.

When Rosa asked whether she had seen Marco, Gianna smiled.

“He is learning not to interrupt adults.”

Then she walked upstairs to change.

Rosa knew fear.

She had lived eleven years inside Dominic Baron’s stone mansion, where men lowered their voices before entering certain rooms and vehicles arrived after midnight without using the front gate.

She knew the difference between ordinary silence and the silence people created after something terrible.

The East Garden was too quiet.

“Marco?”

Rain answered.

Rosa followed a trail of disturbed soil toward a drainage trench recently dug beside the cypress hedge.

A shovel lay abandoned in the grass.

One of Marco’s blue sneakers rested near the trench.

Rosa stopped breathing.

She dropped to her knees and drove both hands into the loose earth.

“Marco!”

Nothing.

Then the mud shifted.

Four small fingers broke through the surface.

They opened weakly.

Closed.

Reached again.

Rosa clawed at the soil.

“Marco!”

A sound rose from beneath her hands.

Not a scream.

A breath shaped around one word.

“Rosa… please.”

Horror moved through her body.

Then hardened into purpose.

“I hear you, sweetheart.”

She dug faster, sweeping soil away from his face and chest without pressing down on him.

Marco’s dark hair appeared first.

Then one eye.

His face was gray with mud. His lips trembled as he tried to breathe through the small space Rosa had opened.

“I can’t—”

“Do not talk. I am here.”

She cleared his mouth and nose, then pushed her fingers beneath his shoulder.

Footsteps struck the wet path behind her.

Gianna seized Rosa’s shoulder and tried to rip her backward.

“What are you doing?”

Rosa twisted free and planted herself over the trench.

“What did you do to him?”

Gianna’s polished face changed.

The gentle future wife disappeared.

“Walk away,” she hissed, “or you disappear too.”

Rosa stared directly into her eyes.

For eleven years, she had survived by lowering her gaze.

Not now.

She reached deeper and caught Marco’s forearm.

“Push with your feet, sweetheart.”

Marco kicked weakly against the soft soil.

Rosa pulled.

Gianna looked toward the shovel.

Then toward the mansion.

Rosa’s apron pocket began vibrating.

Gianna froze.

Rosa removed the waterproof phone hidden beneath the fabric.

The call timer showed twenty-three minutes.

Dominic Baron had called from the road shortly before Rosa entered the garden.

He had asked whether Marco was ready for dinner.

Rosa heard the strange silence outside and told him to remain on the line.

She had never disconnected.

She raised the phone toward Gianna.

“Dominic heard every word.”

The superiority vanished from Gianna’s face.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Security lights ignited across the estate one after another.

The terrace doors opened.

A tall silhouette appeared beneath the stone archway.

Dominic stepped into the rain.

He wore a charcoal coat over a black suit. Water struck his dark hair and shoulders, but he did not slow.

His gaze moved from Rosa to the trench.

Then to Marco’s hand gripping the mud.

Gianna stumbled backward.

“Dominic, this is not what it looks like.”

He did not answer her.

He came directly to his son.

Rosa pulled again.

Marco’s upper body emerged from the earth.

He collapsed against her chest, coughing and trembling.

She wrapped her apron around him and shielded his face from the rain.

Dominic dropped beside them.

The most feared man on the Eastern Seaboard stared at his child and became only a father.

“Marco.”

The boy opened one eye.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

Gianna began moving toward the mansion.

Dominic lifted one hand.

Four security officers appeared but remained several yards away.

“No one touches her,” he said.

Gianna stopped.

Surprise crossed her face.

She had expected violence.

So had everyone.

Dominic removed his coat and placed it around Marco.

Then he looked at Rosa.

“Ambulance?”

“Already called.”

Only then did he face Gianna.

Mud ran from her hands.

Her missing diamond ring glittered beside the trench.

Rosa tightened her arms around Marco.

“You buried the wrong child.”

Sirens rose beyond the estate gates.

Gianna looked at Dominic, waiting for the monster everyone believed lived beneath his restraint.

He gave her something more dangerous.

A witness who refused to become her excuse.
