Chapter 9 - THE VOICE THAT FOLLOWED THE CHILD
Westbridge asked the court to unseal the emergency clause because Serena’s alleged crimes depended on its meaning.
Her attorneys objected.
They said financial details would prejudice the criminal case.
The judge permitted limited disclosure to investigators and the Blackwood board.
I remained outside the sealed hearing.
Victor learned the full terms.
He looked ill afterward.
“Amelia was afraid of me becoming absent after her death,” he said.
“What did she do?”
“She tied control of the family shares to Ethan’s legal safety.”
“Meaning?”
“I can’t explain publicly yet.”
“You can explain to the woman Serena framed.”
Maria placed one hand on my arm before anger carried me closer.
Victor lowered his voice.
“If a court removes Ethan from my care for repeated neglect, the person appointed as his guardian temporarily controls the trust vote.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“How much, Victor?”
“Fifty-one percent.”
The number changed the shape of everything.
Serena had not targeted a symbolic inheritance.
A guardian could control Blackwood Group.
Not own the money personally.
Not sell Ethan’s assets freely.
But exercise voting authority over the controlling trust during the emergency period.
The clause was intended to prevent an unsafe parent from using company power to retain custody.
Serena turned it into an incentive to manufacture danger.
“Did you know?”
“No. Amelia sealed the amendment because she feared I would challenge it emotionally.”
“Did Serena know before you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Through Westbridge.”
“And you planned to marry her.”
Victor had no answer.
The complete reveal remained sealed until the next hearing.
The public still believed the case involved custody and household abuse.
Serena’s family investment firm continued buying Blackwood stock.
Even without the trust vote, a large minority block could pressure the board.
Margaret Ellis suspended all related-party negotiations.
Serena’s father threatened litigation.

Serena planned beyond guardianship.
She had identified directors likely to support her once the trust vote transferred.
Some had received consulting payments.
The board opened an independent investigation.
Two directors resigned.
One denied wrongdoing.
Victor’s absence from management allowed Margaret Ellis to secure records before they disappeared.
At the supervised residence, Ethan began waking at night screaming when someone touched his arm.
Victor followed a therapist’s instructions.
He asked before lifting.
He stopped insisting “Daddy’s here” would automatically calm him.
Sometimes Ethan wanted the night nurse instead.
Victor allowed it.
Parenthood became less about position.
More about responding.
During my second visit, Ethan showed me a stuffed black horse.
“Rena bad.”
The therapist did not encourage labels.
“What did Serena do?” she asked.
Ethan pulled the horse by one leg across the carpet.
Then he covered its mouth with his hand.
The gesture was too specific to ignore.
Victor stared.
“Did she cover your mouth?”
Ethan nodded.
“When?”
The child pointed toward the house drawing.
“Nigh-night.”
Serena may have entered the nursery at night while Victor traveled.
The sedative could have been used more than once.
Hospital records showed unexplained lethargy during two earlier pediatric visits.
Both occurred after Serena supervised bedtime.
The central truth was ready to emerge.
At the unsealing hearing the next morning, the court disclosed Amelia’s clause publicly.
The emergency guardian controlled fifty-one percent of Blackwood Group voting shares.
Serena’s motive became undeniable.
