Chapter 8 - THE EMPTY WINE CELLAR
Claire DuPont was found the next day at a private clinic.
She had admitted herself under a false name after experiencing a panic attack.
She was physically unharmed.
She said Serena instructed her to leave personal belongings in the wine cellar to make police believe she had been abducted.
The false disappearance was meant to divert attention from Westbridge and suggest someone inside Victor’s household was silencing Serena’s staff.
Claire agreed to cooperate after learning Serena publicly described her as unstable.
She admitted presenting forged authorization letters to Westbridge.
She also ordered the emergency bracelet and helped create the household incident templates.
“Did you know Serena planned to hurt Ethan?” Detective Cole asked.
Claire looked down.
“She said the injuries would be minor.”
“What injuries?”
“A fall. Warm water. A pulled arm.”
“You understood a two-year-old would be physically harmed?”
“I thought she meant staged photographs.”
“Why order a medical bracelet before the third incident?”
“Because the emergency petition was supposed to be filed that night.”
The direct admission transformed the case.
Claire said Serena planned the foyer scene but did not specify the exact force.
Dr. Wells promised that three documented incidents would trigger the sealed trust clause.
Serena expected Victor to remain at dinner.
Security cameras would be disabled.
I would be blamed.
The child-protection consultant would validate the report.
The court would remove Ethan from Victor temporarily.
Serena would present herself as the only familiar adult with no accusation against her.
“Why use Lily?” Cole asked.
“Because she was close to Ethan and had no family money to defend herself.”
The answer sat inside me like ice.
I had been selected not only because Ethan trusted me.
Because Serena believed I was disposable.
Claire also described the sapphire bracelet.
Serena used it against Rebecca years earlier, then recovered it through the separation agreement. She kept it for another accusation.
The same object traveled from woman to woman, converting childcare concern into theft.
Police arrested Serena on charges including aggravated child abuse, unlawful restraint, assault, evidence fabrication, forgery, and conspiracy.
She was released temporarily after a bail hearing with strict monitoring because the court found no flight history and substantial property ties.
I wanted detention.
The judge followed legal standards rather than my fear.
Serena’s guardianship petition remained active until formally dismissed.
Her attorneys now argued Claire fabricated the plan for leniency.
Independent records supported her.
The bracelet order.
The forged signatures.
The report timestamps.
The medication.
The camera commands.
The financial purchases.
The court dismissed Serena’s petition and expanded Victor’s supervised custody.
The judge did not restore every freedom.
Victor needed parenting evaluation, household reform, and proof he could identify danger without relying on status.
He accepted.
I was allowed one supervised visit with Ethan at a child center.
When he saw me, he ran with his healing arm tucked against his body.
“Lily!”
I knelt.
He stopped before reaching me, waiting.
“Can I hug you?” I asked.
He nodded.
I held him gently.
His body relaxed.
The supervisor wrote everything down.
Afterward, Victor waited near the exit.
“I owe you more than an apology.”
“You owe Ethan attention.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
His face tightened.
“I am learning what I failed to see.”
That answer was better than certainty.
Then Maria called.
Claire had revealed a financial phrase Serena used repeatedly:
“When the emergency guardian activates, the Blackwood vote follows the child.”
