Chapter 8 - THE SECOND LEDGER

Technicians recovered fragments from Melissa’s phone.

The photograph had been taken by her.

Her denial was no longer complete.

She admitted Robert threatened to accuse her of participating in the shell transfers unless she withdrew her statement.

She had entered invoices without knowing the vendors were related to Chloe and Ethan. When she questioned them, Robert told her Alexander had approved everything privately.

Melissa agreed to cooperate through counsel.

The shredded records were collected from the venue’s waste contractor before destruction.

Reconstruction would take weeks.

One fragment contained repeated payments to North Crest Holdings.

The registered manager was Ethan.

Another showed Robert receiving “security modernization fees” far beyond his salary.

The first concrete financial link had appeared.

Chloe called it normal wedding and venue business.

Ethan produced consulting agreements.

The documents were dated properly and signed by Robert.

They could still be false.

Alexander secured an injunction preventing the sale or new loan until the audit ended.

Chloe responded by announcing that the injunction would bankrupt Vale House and cost seventy employees their jobs.

Workers protested outside our home.

Someone painted GOLD DIGGER across our gate.

Lily saw it before I covered the letters.

My urge to fight publicly became almost unbearable.

Instead, I documented everything and remained silent.

The reconstructed server showed a second accounting ledger hidden beneath my username.

It contained legitimate payments mixed with false ones.

Whoever built it understood enough real work from my employment years to imitate my habits.

Only a few people had access to those old files.

Robert.

Chloe.

Alexander.

I confronted my husband.

“Did you ever give Chloe my project archives?”

He looked away.

After I left Vale House, Alexander had allowed Chloe to use my event templates for her charity committee.

He believed the files belonged to the family company.

My name, invoices, and signature samples had remained inside them.

He had handed over the material used to construct the false ledger.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

“No. You never needed to know until ignorance stopped protecting you.”

Then Lily remembered Robert’s words before the shove.

He had looked at the fountain and told Chloe:

“The water makes it look accidental.”
