Chapter 7 - THE WITNESS WHO CHANGED HIS STORY

The videographer’s sudden payment did not automatically prove bribery.

Ethan said it was repayment for promotional work.

No contract existed.

Detective Grant subpoenaed the trust records.

Meanwhile, Chloe petitioned the family court for temporary restrictions on our contact with Lily’s paternal grandparents, claiming the fountain incident showed I exposed my daughter to dangerous conflict.

The request was weak.

It still forced Lily into another professional interview.

The edited video appeared beside the filing.

Robert claimed he reached toward me only after I stumbled.

Ethan swore Lily’s memory had been coached.

Alexander wanted to issue a public attack.

I refused.

“Let the full evidence arrive before we become another family shouting through statements.”

He listened.

That was new.

The outside auditor recovered a deleted ledger from Vale House’s accounting server.

It showed millions in payments divided among event vendors, consulting firms, and construction companies.

The ledger’s user name was mine.

Emma Torres Vale.

The creation date was three years after I stopped working there.

Robert’s administrator account had the ability to create users.

He denied doing it.

One of the venue accountants, Melissa Ward, told the auditor she had seen Robert maintaining separate records.

Hours later, she changed her statement.

She said I had pressured her to lie.

I had never spoken to her.

Melissa’s husband worked for Ethan’s company.

Their mortgage was months behind.

Detective Grant warned us not to contact her.

That night Melissa sent me a photograph from an unknown number.

Robert stood beside an industrial shredder in the venue’s archive room.

Beneath the image she wrote:

HE KNOWS THE COURT ORDER IS COMING.

I forwarded it to Grant without replying.

Police reached Vale House within thirty minutes.

The shredder was warm.

Several bags of paper had been removed.

Melissa denied sending the photograph.

Then investigators found her phone smashed in the fountain where Robert had pushed Lily and me.
