Chapter 26 - LILY’S SON

Lily became a mother at thirty-two.
A boy named Evan.
At three, Evan loved taking off his shoes.
Of course.
One winter afternoon, he ran toward the back door barefoot.
Lily caught him.
“Shoes.”
“No.”
“Then inside.”
“Want snow!”
“Shoes first.”
He screamed.
She waited.
No threat.
No:
Then you can freeze.
No shame.
Finally he put on boots.
Then coat.
Then gloves.
Outside.
Ten minutes later:
“Cold!”
Lily opened the door immediately.
That night she called me.
Ninety-nine.
Still there.
Barely impressed by age.
“Grandpa.”
“Yes?”
“I thought about Claudia.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“I opened the door.”
May you like
There.
That was enough.
