Chapter 16 - LILY LEARNS WINTER

First winter after Snowmere, Lily hated cold air.
Even from an open freezer.
If wind touched her bare feet, she panicked.
No forced exposure.
Maya built tiny choices.
Socks near every door.
She chose her coat.
She chose when to step onto the porch.
First attempt:
Ten seconds.
Then inside.
Hot chocolate.
Not reward.
Warm drink.
Second:
Thirty seconds.
Third:
She touched snow wearing mittens.
At five, she built a snow duck.
Not snowman.
Why?
“Snowmen are boring.”
Fair.
She still did not want Snowmere.
Good.
Healing did not require returning to the scene.
At six, she asked:
“Why did Claudia hate me?”
“She didn’t need to hate you to hurt you.”
Confusing.
“Then why?”
“She cared more about controlling what happened than about keeping you safe.”
“Dad too?”
I breathed.
“Yes.”
“But Dad loves me.”
“Yes.”
She frowned.
“Both?”
“Yes.”
That was one of the hardest truths:

Love does not prevent cowardice.
Children should know that without learning love is meaningless.
