Chapter 24 - SARAH
Emma’s daughter was born healthy.
Her name was Sarah.
No family naming strategy.
They liked it.
Simple.
The first time I held Sarah, I asked.
Emma smiled.
“You’re seventy? No, sixty-four. Still asking.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Sarah grew up knowing rain as fun.
At three, she jumped in puddles.
Emma watched from the porch.
I saw emotion cross her face.
Then Daniel came outside carrying tiny yellow boots.
Sarah screamed:
“RAIN!”
And ran.
Emma joined.
No one discussed history.
At four, Sarah got sick.
Fever.
Cough.
Ordinary infection.
The pediatrician prescribed medication and rest.
Emma became anxious around food.
“She didn’t eat lunch.”
Daniel said:
“She had yogurt.”
“That’s not lunch.”
“Emma.”
She stopped.
The old memory was speaking.
She called Maya’s successor.
No shame.
No pretending healing meant never being triggered.
Sarah ate toast later.
No one forced more.
At bedtime she asked:
“Mommy, can sick kids still get in trouble?”
Emma froze.
“Why?”
“I colored the wall.”
There it was.
Blue crayon.
Long line.
Emma stared.
Then started laughing.
Sarah looked offended.
“You are in trouble for the wall.”
“Food?”
“You still get breakfast.”
“Rain?”
“What about rain?”
“No outside punishment.”
Emma sat on the floor.
“No. Never.”
Sarah nodded.
“Okay.”

Later Emma called me.
“I think I understood something.”
“What?”
“Diana made punishment bigger than the mistake until the punishment became the point.”
“Yes.”
“I’m scared of ever doing that.”
“Being scared can help if it makes you check yourself.”
“And if it makes me never discipline?”
“Less helpful.”
Therapy Dad again.
She sighed.
Sarah grew.
The story of Diana came later.
Not at four.
Not as a warning fairy tale.
At eight:
An adult once hurt Mom and got legal consequences.
At twelve:
More detail.
At sixteen:
Court records if she wanted.
No secret waiting to explode.
