Chapter 19 - DIANA OUTSIDE PRISON

Diana was released under supervision.

Age forty-nine.

Older.

Quieter.

No Harrington role.

No Ramirez role.

No fiduciary license.

No direct contact with Emma.

She moved to another state.

Worked in administrative consulting unrelated to investments.

Her family did not restore her old position.

Lucas maintained limited contact with her.

Not my concern.

Emma was nineteen.

She said no to meeting.

At twenty-one, no.

At twenty-four:

“One time.”

Neutral mediation center.

I did not attend.

Maya’s successor did.

Emma told me later.

First question:

“Why the chain?”

Diana cried.

Emma waited.

Finally:

“Because I wanted a consequence you could not walk away from.”

That was terrifyingly honest.

“Why outside?”

“I thought the cold and rain would make you give up faster.”

“Did you know I was sick?”

“Yes.”

“Why no food?”

“I wanted hunger to make the choice simpler.”

Emma’s face hardened even retelling it.

Then:

“Did you think I could die?”

“No.”

“Did you know I could get worse?”

“Yes.”

“Then what difference?”

Diana had no good answer.

Emma continued:

“Did you love Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me?”

Diana took too long.

“I wanted to.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Diana looked down.

“No.”

Truth.

Not comforting.

Useful.

Emma asked:

“Would you do it now?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I spent years believing prison was the worst thing that happened to me. Then I realized the worst thing was becoming someone who could hear a child cry and calculate how long to wait.”

Emma ended the meeting after twenty-seven minutes.

No hug.

No forgiveness.

Outside, she called me.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“I’m okay.”

“Do you want me to come?”

“No.”

Choice.

Then:

“Maybe dinner.”

“I can do dinner.”

We ate tacos.

She did not discuss Diana again that night.

That was healthy too.
