Chapter 22 - EMMA’S WEDDING

Emma married Daniel at thirty.
Small ceremony.
Garden.
No security spectacle.
No trust announcement.
No Ramirez Sentinel branding.
I walked her halfway down the aisle.
Then stopped.
She walked the rest herself.
Her idea.
“I’m not being transferred.”
“Painfully correct.”
Diana was not invited.
Lucas Harrington was not invited.
Nora was.
Naomi.
Maya.
Helena Brooks.
People connected to repair rather than bloodline alone.
At dinner, thunder sounded in the distance.
Emma looked up.
Then continued eating.
No one else noticed.
I did.
I said nothing.
Daniel later asked for my blessing?
No.
He had asked Emma.
Correct.
Before the wedding he did ask me one thing.
“Anything I should know about the trust?”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Emma says it can complicate estate planning.”
Good answer.
We gave them separate attorneys.
Prenuptial agreement.
Transparent.
Not because Daniel was suspicious.
Because clarity protects everyone.
Emma retained her trust rights separately.
Their marital assets defined.
No family-office gatekeeper.
Direct copies to both.
Daniel read every page.
Then made Emma read his too.
She complained.
I smiled.
Boring good choices.
At the reception, Nora gave Emma a small gift.
An umbrella.
Inside the handle:
Emergency whistle.
Emma laughed.
“Too much?”
Nora asked.
“Perfect.”
They hugged.
No debt.
No savior language.
Just history.
Years later, Diana sent a wedding card through counsel even though she knew she was not invited.
Emma read it privately.
Congratulations. I hope every promise in your marriage is something both of you understand before signing.
Emma almost threw it away.
Then kept it.
“Why?”
“Because it’s good advice.”
People can say true things after doing terrible ones.
No contradiction.
The marriage settled into ordinary life.
Bills.
Work.
Arguments about dishes.
Daniel leaving socks everywhere.
Emma overbooking weekends.
Normal problems.
No one used food.
Weather.
Money.
May you like
Or doors as punishment.
That was more radical than any trust reform.
