Chapter 25 - Odessa’s Career

Odessa did not work at Second Bell.

Everyone expected her to.

Founder’s daughter.

Trust beneficiary.

Mission rights.

No.

She became an urban planner.

Public parks.

Transit-adjacent neighborhoods.

Affordable housing.

People asked whether her interest in public space came from food insecurity.

She rolled her eyes.

“I like cities.”

Good.

Trauma does not get naming rights over every adult choice.

She remained an informed trust beneficiary.

Attended annual meetings.

Asked difficult questions.

Sometimes voted through consultation to expand programs.

Sometimes supported cost cuts.

Once she backed closing a beloved but inefficient subsidized kitchen.

Employees were furious.

She explained:

“Protecting mission does not mean protecting every building.”

Claire would have agreed.

Probably.

But dead founders do not get final opinions forever.

That was the point.
