Chapter 21 - Harlan Stops Traveling Wrong

I traveled again.

Of course.

I loved my work.

Odessa grew.

There was no need to turn one failure into permanent house arrest for either of us.

The change was how.

Direct school access.

No single partner controlling communication.

Written caregiver roles.

No financial documents bundled with travel paperwork.

Regular private calls with Odessa.

No adult in the room unless she wanted.

At sixteen she told me:

“You’re calling too much.”

Victory.

“How much is correct?”

“Twice a week.”

“Three.”

“Two.”

“Two plus emergency.”

“Fine.”

Negotiation.

Not surveillance.

I eventually dated.

Slowly.

Odessa met nobody for a year.

Not because she controlled my love life.

Because home safety mattered.

At fifty I married Laura Bennett, an emergency physician.

She had her own apartment until after the wedding.

Her own money.

No interest in Second Bell governance.

When Naomi handed us the prenuptial agreement, Laura read every page.

Then made me read it out loud.

Odessa laughed.

Claire’s ghost apparently had employees.
