Chapter 24 - MY COMPANY

My consulting firm grew.

Then stopped growing because I chose to stop.

At fifty-two, I sold a majority stake to employees and management.

Not because wealth frightened me.

Because I did not want every decision tied to my name forever.

I kept minority ownership.

Board seat for three years.

Then left.

Emma asked:

“Did Dad ruin business for you?”

“No.”

“Did all that money stuff make you hate money?”

“No.”

“What did it do?”

“Made me hate unclear power.”

She nodded.

That was the lesson.

The house remained.

I could have sold.

Didn’t.

Not because Dad’s trust ordered worship.

Because I liked it after renovation.

The living room where Vivian had sat?

New floor.

New furniture.

The kitchen?

Different stove.

No stain from the pot.

I did not preserve damage.

The house became ours again through use.

Birthday parties.

Homework.

Teen arguments.

Margaret asleep on sofa by choice.

Ryan entering only when invited for shared events years later.
