Vivian appealed one fraud conviction.
The appellate court found one jury instruction too broad.
That count was vacated.
Core elder-abuse and fraud convictions remained.
Her sentence reduced modestly.
Headlines said:
VIVIAN BENNETT WINS APPEAL.
Mom rolled her eyes.
“She won what?”
“One count.”
“Is she coming here?”
“No.”
“Then they need better verbs.”
I laughed.
Years later, after supervised release, Vivian requested restorative mediation with Margaret.
Mom said no.
At seventy-two:
Still no.
At seventy-four:
“One letter.”
Vivian wrote:
I believed Margaret owed the household something because Claire paid for everything.
Mom stopped.
“That sentence is insane.”
“Yes.”
She continued.
I resented that Claire could finance a life Ryan could not finance himself. I told myself Margaret’s work balanced the scales.

Dependence.
Pride.

When Margaret became tired, I treated that as proof she was weak rather than proof I was asking too much.
Mom read silently.
Vivian admitted grabbing.
