Chapter 24 - LUCINDA’S LAST YEARS

Lucinda lived into her late eighties.

No mystery.

No sudden poisoning.

No secret confession.

She developed heart failure.

Then mobility problems.

Her relationship with Stellan became limited but real.

Phone calls.

Occasional visits.

No financial authority.

No demands.

Mine remained distant.

At eighty-seven she asked to see me once.

I agreed.

She said:

“I thought you took my son.”

I answered:

“He was thirty-seven.”

She almost smiled.

“I know.”

“Did you think that then?”

“No.”

There.

Then:

“I thought Maribel’s pain gave me permission to demand compensation from someone else.”

“Yes.”

“I am sorry.”

“I believe you.”

She looked surprised.

“That doesn’t mean we become close.”

“I know.”

Good.

No hug.

No cinematic forgiveness.

She died the following year from heart failure.

Her estate paid remaining obligations.

Lawful assets distributed.

She left Rosalie pearl earrings.

Rosalie sold them.

Donated proceeds to a postpartum legal-aid clinic.

Her choice.

No one asked my permission.
