Chapter 6 - THE FOUNDATION LEDGER
The Bennett Family Foundation funded maternal-health programs, neonatal equipment, and housing for families with hospitalized children.
Its public reputation was excellent.
Brooke managed grants and donor relations.
Evelyn controlled investment decisions.
The ledger visible in the camera clip contained handwritten transfers to companies no one recognized.
Daniel’s trust attorney requested the foundation’s records under the first-grandchild audit provision.
Evelyn refused, claiming the audit had been postponed because Leo’s medical crisis made the child’s representation uncertain.
The trust document said no such thing.
An independent trustee, Margaret Sloan, petitioned probate court to enforce access.
Evelyn’s attorneys responded that Daniel and I were unfit to act for Leo because Daniel committed violence and I suffered psychiatric instability.
Their plan had already created both arguments.
Daniel’s punch became more than a personal mistake.
It gave Evelyn a documented incident she could use to question his judgment.
My confinement created photographs she could use against me.
The family court appointed a guardian ad litem to represent Leo independently.
Her name was Melissa Grant.
She visited him in the hospital, spoke with doctors, reviewed police evidence, and interviewed Daniel and me separately.
“What is your priority?” she asked Daniel.
“Keeping Leo and Chloe safe.”
“What if that requires you to remain away temporarily?”
Daniel struggled.
“Then I stay away.”
“What if your mother is prosecuted?”
“I cooperate.”
“What if Chloe does not forgive you for leaving her with them?”
His eyes filled.
“That is hers to decide.”
Melissa asked me whether I trusted Daniel.
“I trust that he did not know what they were doing.”
“That is not the same question.”
“No.”
“Do you feel safe with him?”
“I don’t know yet.”
He had never struck me.
He had also punched his mother while holding our sick child moments earlier.
Safety required more than choosing the right target.
The hospital cultures identified the cause of Leo’s fever.
A urinary tract infection had reached his kidneys.
Such infections can occur without abuse.
The danger came from delay.
He likely developed fever many hours before Daniel returned.
Evelyn and Brooke had not sought care.
Brooke searched online:

The searches occurred before noon.
Daniel arrived at six that evening.
They knew.
Why allow Leo to worsen?
The ledger clip offered part of the answer.
Brooke said:
“If he sees the baby sick and Chloe falling apart, he signs.”
Evelyn replied:
“He signs before the hospital starts asking questions.”
Their plan required a medical emergency.
