Chapter 1 - THE CAMERAS WILL ANSWER

Daniel lifted our six-week-old son from the bassinet and recoiled.

Leo’s face was flushed beneath the blanket. His mouth opened, but the sound that escaped was barely more than air.

“Why is my son burning with fever?”

My husband’s voice broke across the nursery.

I gripped the doorframe because my knees could no longer hold me without help. My nursing top hung loosely against my body. One cheek throbbed where Brooke had struck me that morning.

Evelyn and Brooke stood behind me, blocking the hallway.

I crossed the room and caught Daniel’s sleeve.

“I begged for help.” My lips trembled so hard the words broke apart. “They beat me. They starved me.”

Daniel stared at the swelling along my cheek.

His expression changed.

He pressed the digital thermometer beneath Leo’s arm while holding him against his chest.

The numbers climbed.

101.8.

102.4.

103.1.

Daniel reached for his phone.

Evelyn stepped closer with cold impatience.

“She’s overreacting. Babies get warm.”

Daniel handed Leo to me for one second.

Then he crossed the room and punched his mother.

Evelyn crashed onto the carpet beside the changing table.

“So, you’re the one who put your hands on my wife.”

Brooke screamed.

Daniel froze as though he finally understood what he had done. His knuckles remained clenched, but the fury in his face had already become horror.

I pulled Leo against my chest.

“Hospital,” I whispered. “Please.”

Daniel unlocked his phone and called emergency services. Then he opened the home-security application.

Evelyn pushed herself upright and lunged toward him.

Brooke’s wineglass slipped from her hand and shattered.

Daniel turned the screen away from them.

A saved clip began playing.

The timestamp showed the previous night.

On-screen, Evelyn stood outside my locked bedroom while I struck the door from inside.

Brooke carried Leo down the hallway.

My recorded voice begged:

“He needs to eat. Bring him back.”

Brooke looked toward the camera.

Evelyn answered from beside the lock:

“Keep her weak until Daniel signs.”

The clip ended.

No one moved.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What am I supposed to sign?”

Evelyn’s face emptied of color.

Sirens approached the house.

Brooke whispered, “Mom, the rest of the archive.”

Evelyn turned toward the security panel.

Daniel stepped between her and the wall.

Paramedics rushed into the nursery moments later.

One took Leo from me. Another guided me toward a chair.

As they carried my son downstairs, I saw Brooke reach beneath the bassinet and remove a pale blue folder.

She tried to hide it under her blouse.

The folder carried one printed line:

EMERGENCY FAMILY AUTHORITY.

I did not know what authority they wanted.

But they had allowed my newborn to burn with fever while waiting for Daniel to give it to them.
