Chapter 4 - THE PIT WAS NOT THE FIRST RESTRAINT

Police asked about the garden.
Not emotions.
Sequence.
At 7:10 a.m., Berenger removed my debit card from my purse.
I asked for it back.
He said:
“After you sign.”
At 8:00, Leandra arrived.
Unannounced to me.
Expected by Berenger.
At 8:20, I tried to order breakfast delivery from my laptop.
Berenger disconnected the router.
I still had cellular data on my hidden phone but did not want him to know it existed.
At 9:00, he told me we would “finish the share conversation.”
I refused.
At 9:40, I attempted to leave through the front door.
My car keys were gone.
At 10:05, I walked toward the backyard gate.
Leandra stood there.
She said:
“Stop embarrassing yourself.”
Did she physically block me?
She stood directly in the gate opening.
When I moved left, she moved left.
No touching.
Still blocking.
I turned away.
At 10:30, Berenger told me he had dropped my spare keys into the garden bed during an earlier argument.
I stepped down to look.
The temporary wooden step board was removed.
I turned.
He had it in his hands.
That was when I knew.
I shouted.
Leandra said:
“Sit down before you fall.”
Berenger told me:
“You’ll come out when you sign.”
Then the dirt.
Initially only around my ankles.
He called it:
“Making the point physical.”
I tried to climb.
Loose soil collapsed.
Pregnancy changed my balance.
Then another load.
Then another.
No buried chest.
No suffocation.
No cinematic grave.
Just enough weight and depth to keep a pregnant woman from climbing safely.
The legal language might be unlawful restraint.
Domestic violence.
Assault.
Coercion.
The prosecutor would decide.
I called it terror.
Then food.
Had they intended starvation?
No evidence of days without food.
I had eaten dinner the night before.
No breakfast that morning.
No lunch.
Berenger used hunger as pressure.
That was serious without inventing more.
Then hidden phone.
Why did I have it?
Because three weeks earlier, Berenger had taken my normal phone during an argument and kept it overnight.
The next day I bought a prepaid device with cash from a pharmacy.
I stored it in a clear pouch inside a box of gardening gloves.
When the consent pressure intensified, I moved it to the backyard planter the night before.
Was that proof I expected violence?
I didn’t know.
I expected control.
I wanted a way to call my father without Berenger seeing.
That distinction mattered to me.
Maybe not to police.
Then the arrival timing.
Dad had already been driving toward my house.
Why?
At 10:52, board counsel called him after the directors voted.
Dad tried me at 11:05.
No answer.
Again at 11:12.
Then Berenger texted Dad from his own phone:
Keep Ianthe out of company business or you’ll regret today.
That worried him.
At 11:18, my emergency location ping arrived.
Dad was six blocks away.
He reached the gate minutes later.
May you like
The fifteen seconds in my memory would always feel like one continuous collision.
In real time, terror had lasted hours.
