Chapter 11 - THE PRENUP LEANDRA NEVER READ

Leandra had never read our prenuptial agreement.

That still surprised me.

She spoke about it constantly.

After the baby comes, you’ll leave with nothing.

Berenger protected himself.

You married into his life.

Then in deposition:

“Have you read the agreement?”

“No.”

“Who explained it?”

“My son.”

There.

Berenger’s version.

The actual prenup was balanced enough that Naomi almost seemed bored.

My premarital shares:

Mine.

His vested pre-marriage equity:

His.

Joint house:

Marital asset subject to documented contributions and applicable law.

Earnings during marriage:

Generally marital.

Retirement contributions during marriage:

Potential marital component.

No waiver of child support.

No automatic custody terms.

No clause saying pregnancy changed anything.

No “leave with nothing.”

Then Berenger’s executive units.

Some vested before marriage.

Some during.

Complicated.

Valuation needed.

Could I receive some marital value from certain compensation?

Possibly.

Could I take his entire company stake?

No.

Could he take my twelve percent gifted before marriage?

Not under the agreement.

Then Leandra’s response:

“Berenger told me Gideon designed it to protect Ianthe.”

Naomi answered:

“Both parties had separate counsel.”

Correct.

Then Leandra:

“He still paid for the house.”

Not alone.

Records showed both.

Then:

“He paid more monthly.”

True.

His salary was higher.

That did not convert me into a guest.

Then child support.

Would Berenger owe?

Maybe after birth depending parenting schedule and income.

Would I?

Possible if incomes changed.

No moral prize.

Numbers.

The law was far less dramatic than Leandra’s threats.

That itself was powerful.
