Chapter 18 - IONE ASKS FOR ONE MEETING

Two years after the dinner, Oren was six.
Ione had completed supervised release without violation.
No indirect contact.
No forged documents.
No family administrative authority.
She lived with Merritt in a smaller house after they sold the old estate? Why sell? The dining room maybe too much. Could be Merritt chose. But avoid symbolic sale. They downsized because Merritt retired. Fine.
Ione requested one supervised meeting.
Not entitlement.
Request.
Oren had begun asking:
“Does Grandma still think I’m animal?”
That was the question behind it.
Dr. Kent suggested a meeting could help if structured and child-led.
I wanted to say no.
Then asked Oren.
“Do you want to see Grandma?”
He shrugged.
“To ask.”
“What?”
“You know.”
Yes.
We arranged twenty minutes.
Neutral center.
No Cassian inside.
No Merritt.
Facilitator.
I watched from another room because Oren wanted me nearby.
Ione entered.
No heels now.
Simple trousers.
She looked older.
Oren stared.
“Hi.”
“Hi, Oren.”
Then silence.
He asked:
“Am I animal?”
Ione’s face broke.
“You are a person.”
“Why say leash?”
“Because I was angry and cruel.”
“Cruel what?”
“Mean in a way that hurts someone.”
“You hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ione swallowed.
“Because I believed being obeyed was more important than making you feel safe.”
That answer had therapy all over it.
Still useful if true.
Then:
“Did I do bad?”
“You did normal four-year-old things.”
Oren frowned.
“I threw fork.”
“Yes.”
“Bad.”
“Throwing the fork was wrong. Tying you to the chair was also wrong, and much more serious because I was the adult.”
Good.
No pretending children have no limits.
Then:
“Did Dad know?”
Ione looked at facilitator.
Allowed.
“Your dad knew I was too strict. He did not know everything I planned.”
Oren:
“He saw chair.”
“Yes.”
Ione did not rescue Cassian.
Then:
“Can I leave?”
“Yes.”
Oren stood after twelve minutes.
He walked out.
In hallway:
“You okay?”
“Hungry.”
Of course.
We got tacos.
Did he want another meeting?
“Maybe when seven.”
Fine.
Ione did not request more.
That restraint mattered.
Then Merritt’s relationship.
He had occasional supervised visits too.
Oren liked him more easily.
That complicated my feelings.
Merritt had participated.
Oren still laughed with him.
Children are not sentencing courts.
I allowed safe contact according to plan.
Then Cassian and I updated custody.
Oren was six.
He had been spending alternating weekends plus one midweek dinner with Cassian safely.
Dr. Kent supported additional overnight.
We moved toward roughly 65/35.
Not equal for symbolism.
Based on school and routines.
Then Cassian began dating.
A woman named Mara Ellis.
No relation to our professionals? We used no Mara in this story. Fine.
He told me before introducing Oren.
Not asking permission.
Co-parenting courtesy.
I said:
“Slow.”
“I know.”
He waited seven months.
Oren met her at mini-golf.
She did not discipline him.
No “new mom.”
Good.
My marriage was over.
His future did not need to freeze.
Then I met someone too later. Not necessary yet.
The active danger was gone.
But family court still had one unresolved question.
Could Cassian eventually share legal custody equally after he had once signed papers designed to cut me out for seventy-two hours?
May you like
The answer would not depend on how sorry he looked.
It would depend on years of what he did when nobody was forcing him.
