Chapter 14 - CASSIAN TESTIFIES AGAINST HIS MOTHER

The criminal trial began eleven months after the dinner.

Oren was almost five.

Ione wore navy.

No dramatic prison uniform because she had been on bond.

She looked smaller in court than at the dining table.

That did not make me feel safer.

The prosecution started with the video.

No music.

No narration.

Oren in chair.

Ione fastening strap.

Merritt holding chair.

Cassian entering.

Stopping.

Leaving.

Ione dumping food.

Pushing chair.

Me entering.

My table sweep came later.

The jury saw all of it.

Good.

No editing me into sainthood.

Then my testimony.

“Did you authorize restraint?”

“No.”

“Were you aware of behavioral evaluation?”

“No.”

“Did you know a temporary grandparent placement was being discussed?”

“No.”

Defense cross:

“You swept an entire dining table onto the floor.”

“Yes.”

“Shattered dishes.”

“Yes.”

“While holding your child.”

“I put him down briefly before sweeping? Wait source says Zinnia frees and pulls him, then sweeps table and picked up Oren toward door. So likely Oren was standing near her when sweep. Let's be precise.”

I corrected:

“Oren was beside me, not in my arms during the sweep.”

“Was that safe?”

“I should not have done it.”

Good.

“You threatened the family.”

“I said, ‘Tomorrow, you’ll regret what you’ve done.’”

“Threatening?”

“I meant I would act.”

“Police?”

“Yes.”

“Court?”

“Yes.”

No violent plan.

Then:

“Did you and Ione have conflict before?”

“Yes.”

“Did you dislike her?”

“Yes.”

“Could that affect your interpretation?”

“My opinion can be affected. The video is not.”

Good.

Then Merritt.

He admitted.

No minimizing.

Defense tried:

“You believed Ione was preventing the chair from tipping?”

“For seconds.”

“Then?”

“I understood Oren was being restrained.”

“Did you see her slap him?”

No slap in source. She did not slap him. Good. No.

“Did she strike him?”

“No.”

“Did she intend to injure?”

“I cannot know.”

Correct.

Then Cassian.

My husband—almost ex-husband—walked to the stand.

Prosecutor:

“Did your mother restrain you as a child?”

Defense objected relevance.

Judge allowed limited context after foundation.

Cassian:

“Yes.”

“Did you warn her not to restrain Oren?”

“Yes.”

Message shown.

DO NOT EVER TIE HIM LIKE YOU DID ME.

“On the night in question, did you see Oren restrained?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Why?”

Cassian swallowed.

“I told myself Mom would stop if I didn’t challenge her.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Did you believe Oren posed immediate danger?”

“No.”

“Did you believe food needed to be withheld?”

“No.”

“Why did you tell Zinnia, ‘Mom said he’s been impossible lately’?”

His eyes filled.

“Because I was defending my mother before I admitted what I was looking at.”

That sentence landed harder than accusation.

Then Project Anchor.

Cassian admitted signing original declaration.

Admitted considering temporary residence.

Admitted seeing no-contact proposal.

Denied authorizing altered declaration.

Forensic evidence supported.

Defense asked:

“So you agreed with Ione that Oren needed structure.”

“Yes.”

“You trusted her judgment.”

“Yes.”

“Your wife often undermined discipline?”

Cassian looked at me.

“We disagreed.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He paused.

“At the time, I described it that way.”

“And now?”

“I think I used ‘undermining’ when Brenna meant ‘no.’”

There.

Then Dr. Shore.

No recommendation.

Then Rebecca Sloan.

No legal advice supporting unilateral move.

Then forensic examiner.

Ione’s laptop.

Altered declaration.

Copied signature.

Intent still jury.

Ione chose to testify.

Her lawyer advised? Unknown.

She did.

“I love my grandson.”

I believed she believed that.

Then restraint:

“He kept kicking the chair.”

Video showed movement.

“I used a luggage strap for five minutes.”

True.

Five.

“Did he cry?”

“Yes.”

“Did you dump his food?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He had thrown food earlier.”

“Did he ask to eat?”

“Yes.”

“Did you say animals belong on a leash?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was angry.”

Then forgery.

She called it drafting.

Prosecutor showed filename:

FILE VERSION FINAL — CASSIAN SIGNED.

Created on her laptop.

She admitted naming it.

“Did Cassian sign that version?”

“No.”

“Then why ‘signed’?”

“I intended to show him.”

“Did you send it to Project Anchor folder labeled FILE TOMORROW?”

“Yes.”

Her own words tightened around her.

Then:

“Were you trying to take Oren from his mother?”

Ione stiffened.

“I was trying to save him from a permissive household.”

There.

Not legal standard.

Not her authority.

Her belief.

May you like

The jury would decide the acts.

Family court had already decided where belief ended.
