Chapter 17 - CASSIAN’S FIRST WEEKEND

Cassian earned an overnight.
Not because time passed.
Because evidence changed.
He had completed:
Parenting program.
Individual therapy.
Family-boundary work.
Psychological reassessment.
Twelve months of safe visitation.
No prohibited Ione contact during Oren time.
Consistent return.
No manipulation.
Oren asked for sleepover.
So family court approved one night.
Cassian prepared.
Too much.
New sheets.
Nightlight.
Three breakfast options.
Emergency numbers.
Dr. Kent told him:
“Stop staging safety. Live it.”
He laughed.
Then Friday.
Oren packed pajamas and six toy cars.
I said:
“One bag.”
He packed five.
Compromise.
At Cassian’s apartment, Oren inspected every room.
“Grandma here?”
“No.”
“Grandpa?”
“No.”
“Mom?”
“No.”
“Just us?”
“Yes.”
He looked uncertain.
Then excited.
They ordered pizza.
Oren spilled sauce on rug.
Froze.
Cassian took a breath.
“Paper towels.”
Oren:
“No chair?”
“No.”
They cleaned.
Later Oren would tell me every detail.
Then bedtime.
He wanted door open.
Cassian opened.
At 2 a.m., Oren climbed into his bed.
Cassian let him sleep there.
Dr. Kent later said acceptable during transition.
No rigid rule.
Morning pancakes.
Park.
Home by four.
I looked at Oren.
“You good?”
“Yes.”
“Want another someday?”
“Yes.”
Cassian heard.
His eyes filled.
He looked away so Oren would not have to handle it.
Good.
Then our co-parenting shifted.
One overnight became two a month.
Then alternating weekends.
Not equal.
Yet.
Oren remained primarily with me.
School nights stable.
Then Ione completed custodial portion and entered supervised release.
Cassian visited her alone.
I did not care until it affected Oren.
After visit he told me:
“She apologized.”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“Teaching me fear was respect.”
That was significant.
Then:
“She wants to know if I forgive her.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I’m working out whether I want a relationship, not whether I can pronounce a word.”
Good.
He saw her occasionally.
No Oren information beyond general:
He is healthy.
No photographs without consent.
No schedules.
Ione accepted so far.
Then her therapist submitted a future-contact assessment.
Not recommendation.
Possibility after extended compliance and Oren’s interest.
I was not ready.
That was okay.
No one forced.
Then one parenting disagreement.
Cassian let Oren stay up until ten on weekend.
I was furious.
“His bedtime is eight.”
“Weekend.”
“He’s exhausted.”
“Then he’ll sleep.”
I heard my own control rising.
We mediated ourselves.
Rule:
Weekends flexible up to nine, special events later with communication.
No Ione.
No court.
No catastrophe.
Ordinary co-parenting disagreement.
That felt enormous.
Then Oren’s preschool graduation.
He walked across tiny stage.
Cassian and I sat separate.
Merritt invited? No.
Oren looked into audience.
Found both of us.
Waved.
No hierarchy.
Then teacher served cookies.
Oren took two.
I said:
“One now, one after.”
He grinned.
“Animals?”
My heart stopped.
Where did he get that?
He laughed.
“Shark animal.”
He was joking.
The phrase had changed context.
May you like
Not fully.
But enough that I could breathe again.
