Chapter 23 - RYAN’S LETTERS

Ryan wrote from prison.

First letters:

Excuses.

Stress.

Meridian.

Linda.

Pregnancy.

My father.

Money.

I returned them.

Later:

“I hit you.”

I kept that one.

Then:

“I photographed the bruises because I wanted proof ready if you accused me.”

Specific.

Then:

“I knew you did not have bipolar disorder.”

Specific.

Then:

“I told Mom to get the prescription because I thought the record would scare you into signing.”

Specific.

Then:

“I told myself I was saving the company.”

He continued:

“I was saving my ownership.”

Finally.

Then:

“I used our daughter before she was born.”

I put the letter away.

Not forgiveness.

Evidence of accountability maybe.

At fourteen, Rebecca asked to read selected letters.

Therapist.

Court.

Me.

We agreed.

She read three.

Then asked:

“Did he ever say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe him?”

“I believe he regrets consequences. I don’t know how much else.”

She nodded.

“Can I write him?”

“Yes.”

Her letter:

I know you’re my father. That doesn’t mean you get to tell me what our relationship is.

I cried when I read it.

May you like

She inherited my no.

Better defended.
