Chapter 6 - Lysandra

Lysandra moved out after forty-one years of marriage.
Not because I told her.
Not because Rafferty demanded.
She went to her sister’s house.
Ambrose called it betrayal.
She called it:
“I can’t hear myself think in that house anymore.”
Rafferty did not rescue her.
That was deliberate.
His therapist later helped him see how often he had become mediator between his parents.
Mom upset.
Dad angry.
Rafferty fixes.
No more.
Lysandra got her own lawyer.
Own bank account? She already had joint/marital rights. No secret finances plot.
She pursued legal separation initially.
Then divorce later.
Normal division.
No hidden trust.
She met me once at a café.
“Delphine, I need to apologize.”
I held up a hand.
“Not for Ambrose.”
She stopped.
“For you.”
Fine.
“I found the first key.”
“Yes.”
“I should have called.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I needed proof.”
“You had a key with my child’s name.”
“I know.”
I let silence sit.
Then:
“I spent forty years convincing myself that Ambrose’s methods looked worse from the outside than they felt inside the family.”
“Did they?”
Her eyes filled.
“No.”
Then she said something I did not expect.
“I used to unlock things for Rafferty.”
“What?”
“When Ambrose put him in the basement.”
I went still.
“Locked?”
“Sometimes.”
“For how long?”
“Minutes.”
“Were you there?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“Wait until Ambrose left.”
Then unlock.
Secret protection.
Which also allowed system to continue.
Lysandra knew that.
“I thought I was protecting my son.”
“You were sometimes.”
“And protecting my marriage.”
“Yes.”
She cried.
Then:
“When I found Callum’s keys, I recognized them.”
My chest tightened.
“That’s why you knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Ambrose had started again?”
“I suspected.”
“And you waited.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Then:
“I am sorry.”
I believed the apology.
Trust?
Not restored.
Contact with Callum?
Not yet.
That decision belonged to safety and Callum.
May you like
Lysandra accepted.
Good.
