Chapter 14 - Lysandra Leaves
Lysandra filed for divorce.
Not legal separation anymore.
Ambrose accused us of turning her against him.
She answered through attorney:
No.
She had spent forty-one years with him.
The keys were the final event.
Property division ordinary.
House.
Retirement.
Savings.
No secret fortune.
Ranger stayed with Ambrose by agreement.
Lysandra moved to a small townhouse.
She bought her own furniture.
Called no one to assemble shelves.
That became important to her.
Then she asked to see Callum.
Dr. Bell met her first.
Questions:
Did she believe Ambrose’s crate was appropriate?
“No.”
Did she know about prior confinement?
“Not before I found keys.”
Did she suspect?
“Yes.”
Why not warn?
Fear of family rupture.
Did she recognize pattern from Rafferty?
“Yes.”
Did she understand that hiding keys without alerting parents left Callum at risk?
“Yes.”
Would she ever keep Callum’s safety concern secret again?
“No.”
Words.
Then first therapeutic visit.
Callum entered with Scout.
Lysandra cried.
Dr. Bell reminded:
“Keep adult feelings with adults.”
She nodded.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
“Hi.”
Then Callum:
“You had keys.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I found them.”
“Why no tell?”
There it was.
Lysandra breathed.
“Because I was scared I might be wrong, and I made a bad choice by waiting.”
“Grandpa says scared not excuse.”
Her face broke.
“No.”
Then Callum:
“Was you scared Grandpa?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
Silence.
Then:
“Did he cage Daddy?”
Lysandra looked at Dr. Bell.
She allowed simple answer.
“Your dad had some scary punishments when he was little too.”
“Cage?”
“No dog cage.”
“Door?”
“Yes.”
Callum stared.
Then:
“Daddy cried?”
“Yes.”
He looked almost shocked.
“Daddy?”
From mouths of children.
Lysandra smiled sadly.
“Daddy.”
Callum thought.
Then:
“Can Grandma hug?”
She asked.
He nodded.
Short hug.
No restored babysitting.
No authority.
