Chapter 26 - THE GREEN KEY

First Commonwealth eventually asked what Mia wanted done with the physical green key.

Appeals were over.

Evidence requirements ended.

The metal box had been archived.

The key could be returned.

Destroyed.

Stored.

Mia was thirty-three.

She held it in her palm.

Small.

Green paint chipped at the edges.

“This?”

I nodded.

“That’s what Grandma locked me up for?”

“It opened Arthur’s cabinet.”

“It’s ugly.”

I laughed.

She turned it over.

“I thought it would feel heavier.”

Trauma gives objects imaginary mass.

Mia chose not to keep it.

She also did not want ceremonial destruction.

“Recycle it if you can.”

The evidence unit could not literally guarantee recycling under protocol.

It disposed of the key lawfully.

No bonfire.

No necklace.

No museum.

A key became scrap metal.

That same year Mia had a daughter.

Her name was Sophie.

At four, Sophie became obsessed with keys.

Plastic keys.

Toy keys.

Keys to pretend castles.

Mia watched her play.

The first time Sophie locked the bathroom door accidentally, Mia panicked.

Then used the emergency release.

Door opened in thirty seconds.

Sophie laughed.

Mia cried afterward.

Called me.

“I hated how scared I got.”

“You opened the door.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t yell.”

“No.”

“You didn’t punish her.”

“No.”

“Then the fear showed up. You did not let it choose.”

Silence.

Then:

“You sound like Maya.”

“Terrifying.”

May you like

She laughed.

Ordinary life kept arriving.
