Chapter 18 - CLAIRE RETURNS

Mia was nine when she agreed to lunch with Claire.

Public café.

Me present.

No Patricia.

No Robert.

Claire brought no gifts.

Winston the cat appeared only on her phone.

Mia asked:

“Did you know Grandma put me in the garage?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was hiding money?”

Claire answered carefully.

“I knew there were questions about money. I believed Grandma when she said your mom agreed.”

“Why?”

“Because believing her was easier than asking your mom and maybe finding out something was wrong.”

Mia nodded.

“Mom says grown-ups do that a lot.”

Unfortunately.

Claire continued:

“I benefited from some programs. I should have checked.”

“Did you give my money back?”

“Where auditors said I should, yes.”

“Okay.”

No forgiveness declaration.

They ate grilled cheese.

Claire showed cat videos.

Relationship grew slowly.

By twelve, Mia called her voluntarily.

By fifteen, Claire attended one school concert.
