Chapter 19 - THE SECOND ACCUSATION
Just when we thought the school conflict was over, another parent at Alden accused my niece of copying.
A writing assignment.
No connection to Ivo.
The parent had seen the old scandal online.
Assumed pattern.
My niece came home sobbing.
This time Melisande did something different.
She did not attack the other family.
Did not call donors.
Did not demand suspension.
She asked the teacher:
“What does the evidence show?”
The school compared drafts.
Version history.
Classroom notes.
My niece wrote it herself.
Cleared.
Melisande sent one email:
Thank you for reviewing this fairly.
Then stopped.
Aaron told me.
I was surprised.
Good.
Change should occasionally surprise the people who stopped expecting it.
My niece later told Ivo:
“I hate when people think I cheat because Mom cheated.”
Ivo said:
“I hate when people think I’m genius because Mom tells the story.”
I looked at him.
“I do not tell people you’re a genius.”
“You told Grandma I’m very smart.”
