Chapter 18 - MELISANDE WITHOUT THE SPOTLIGHT
Melisande lost status.
Not housing.
Not livelihood.
Not her daughter.
Status.
For her, devastating.
Family stopped treating her as default organizer.
School committees declined her volunteer applications during probation.
The trust removed her special-request authority.
Friends pulled back after the video.
Some unfairly.
Some reasonably.
She began therapy because Aaron made it a condition of revisiting flexible custody arrangements.
The court had not removed custody.
Important.
No evidence she abused her daughter physically.
But the portfolio fraud and pressure affected parenting.
They modified their parenting plan:
Aaron took primary responsibility for school applications and academic decisions for eighteen months.
Melisande retained ordinary parenting time.
No grades used as punishment.
No forced extracurricular coaching beyond agreed schedule.
Therapist involved.
The first report said:
Melisande equated daughter’s achievement with maternal worth.
Not diagnosis.
Pattern.
She hated the wording.
Then eventually admitted:
“I don’t know who I am when she is ordinary.”
Her therapist apparently answered:
“Then learn.”

I only know because Melisande told me much later.
That sentence helped her more than anything the family ever said.
