Chapter 25 - THE LAST FAMILY VOTE
The final stewardship reform occurred when I was fifty.
The remaining descendant block could continue indefinitely.
I opposed that.
Not because family was bad.
Because permanent family authority had already proven how easily love, history, and power became confused.
The proposal retained only a six-percent descendant safeguard, exercisable jointly with independent fiduciaries for:
Preservation of Thorn House’s charitable mission.
Protection against undisclosed insider transactions.
Protection of beneficiary rights.
Everything else moved into professional and employee governance.
Cecily voted yes.
Faye yes.
Della yes.
Beckett abstained because his restaurant role created a potential conflict.
That abstention made me proud.
Marguerite, now elderly, had consultation rights but no fiduciary authority.
She sent a statement supporting reform.
Some relatives accused us of dissolving the Thorn legacy.
Faye answered:
“Legacy that needs children ranked at a table isn’t stable enough to deserve control.”
That quote spread.
She hated that.
We stopped reading coverage.
Thorn Heritage continued.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Events.
