Chapter 24 - EDWARD’S LAST BIRTHDAY

Edward turned eighty-four in assisted living.

No paper crown.

He asked for one anyway.

The nurse made it from a paper bag.

He laughed.

Della attended.

Faye attended.

Beckett did too, unexpectedly.

Marguerite joined by video under supervision.

Cecily sat beside her screen.

It was the first time all of us had shared a birthday space since the banquet.

No one pretended the symmetry meant healing was complete.

Edward’s meal was meatloaf.

He joked:

“No prime rib?”

Beckett said:

“You’re lucky you got meatloaf.”

Everyone froze.

Then Edward laughed.

Not defensive.

A real laugh.

Beckett smiled.

Humor had finally become possible because no one was hungry.

Edward died six months later after heart failure.

His personal estate went through probate.

Restitution obligations were paid first.

He left each grandchild a small personal item.

Faye received Eleanor’s fountain pen.

Della received a music box.

Beckett received Edward’s watch.

The steel watch he wore at every banquet.

Beckett sold it.

“Why?”

“I wanted knives.”

Chef knives.

Fair trade.

Objects stayed ordinary.
