Chapter 21 - THE TRUST AT EIGHTEEN

Faye turned eighteen first.

First Commonwealth met her in a conference room.

No chandeliers.

No family crest.

She learned the trust numbers.

Her branch held economic interests and future consultation rights under the Eleanor Thorn Stewardship Trust.

Not unlimited cash.

Not ownership of the house.

Not command over employees.

Faye asked:

“Can I sell Thorn House?”

“No.”

“Can Mom?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She studied environmental engineering.

Della later studied early childhood education.

Beckett became obsessed with cooking.

That one scared me emotionally.

He laughed when I told him.

“Food is good, Mom.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Therapy had jokes now.

Beckett worked in restaurant kitchens.

At nineteen, he staged at a hotel restaurant owned partly by Thorn Heritage.

Only after conflict review.

No family title.

No guaranteed promotion.

The chef made him clean refrigerators.

He loved it.

One day he called.

“I served prime rib.”

I stopped breathing for half a second.

“And?”

“People paid for it.”

“Revolutionary.”

He laughed.

Then:

May you like

“I ate before service.”

That sentence made me cry after we hung up.
