Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT BEFORE THE SALE
Owen had not disappeared because he feared Marguerite.
He had helped her.
For years, he altered account descriptions and disguised reserve withdrawals as trust administration.
He contacted us only after Marguerite refused to pay him the final amount promised from the manor sale.
Police located him at his brother’s cabin.
He requested immunity.
Prosecutors refused.
They offered to consider cooperation.
Owen produced a hidden ledger and the location of the original Heritage file.
Marguerite had removed it after Evelyn died and placed it inside a private archive at Thorn Manor.
The court authorized an immediate search.
The archive held empty folders.
A shredder bin contained fragments carrying Evelyn’s initials.
Marguerite claimed Owen destroyed the papers.
Owen claimed Edward ordered it.
The temporary sale pause expired the next morning unless we authenticated the trust.
Silver Acre’s closing team gathered at a downtown title office.
Nora filed one final emergency motion using the ledgers, letter, audio, and scanned document.
The judge extended the pause until noon and ordered Edward to testify.
He appeared by video.
“Did Evelyn create protected interests for her grandchildren?” Nora asked.
Edward looked directly into the camera.
“My wife discussed many plans.”
“That was not the question.”
He lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Did those interests include Faye, Della, and Beckett?”
“Yes.”
“Did you spend money assigned to them?”
His lawyer objected.
The judge overruled.
Edward’s mouth opened.
Before he answered, Marguerite entered the room behind him and disconnected the call.
At 11:37, the court received a new filing from Silver Acre.
The developer had already wired the purchase funds into escrow based on a certificate signed by Marguerite.
The certificate stated the protected shares had been legally extinguished.
Attached was a death certificate for the named beneficiary.
The dead person was Evelyn.
The actual beneficiaries were listed nowhere.
At 11:52, Heritage found a microfilm copy of the missing signature schedule.
Three names appeared beneath Evelyn’s seal:
Faye Thorn.
