Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE I NEVER GAVE

Thorn Manor was more than Edward’s home.

The ballroom and gardens operated as Thorn House Events, the business my parents built while Marguerite and I were children.

I believed Edward owned everything after Evelyn died.

Nora refused to assume that.

The sale contract valued the property at $3.9 million. A developer called Silver Acre Holdings intended to replace the gardens with luxury townhouses.

The consent page contained my forged signature.

So did a document labeled Beneficiary Waiver.

“What am I supposedly waiving?” I asked.

“The contract does not say.”

Nora requested the complete estate and trust files.

Edward’s attorney produced only summaries.

Marguerite called me from a blocked number.

“Stop digging.”

“You forged my signature.”

“You abandoned the family company.”

“I left because you moved money without invoices.”

“You were a payroll clerk.”

“I was the person who noticed.”

Her voice hardened.

“Sign the sale consent properly, and Dad will overlook your scene.”

“My children were hungry.”

“They were useful.”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

I recorded nothing. The call could not prove itself.

Anger overpowered judgment.

I drove to Thorn Manor to retrieve the box of Evelyn’s papers I had stored in the old office.

Marguerite met me at the gate with private security.

She had already obtained a temporary order barring me from the property.

My arrival became evidence that I ignored boundaries.

Nora was furious.

“You walked into the argument they prepared.”

“I wanted Mom’s records.”

“Now we obtain them legally.”

That evening Edward’s property company sent notice terminating my apartment lease in thirty days.

I had not known Thorn Property Holdings owned the building through a subsidiary.

The children and I could lose our home before the manor sale closed.

Then Faye emptied the pockets of the coat she wore to the banquet.

A folded place card fell out.
