Chapter 8 - EVELYN’S LETTER
My mother’s letter did not reveal everything.
It told me where to look.
Evelyn wrote that Thorn Manor had been preserved through a private arrangement created after she sold forty acres of orchard land inherited from her parents.
She feared Edward would use the proceeds to rescue the event business whenever it struggled.
She also feared Marguerite believed family management meant family ownership.
The letter referred to “the children’s protected shares” but did not state their value.
It said the controlling document had been delivered to Heritage Fiduciary Services and that no sale of Thorn Manor could proceed while those shares remained unresolved.
Heritage claimed its file had been closed after Evelyn’s death.
The closure request bore Edward’s signature and Marguerite’s witness certification.
A supporting document supposedly showed my consent.
The flash drive contained scanned statements and photographs, but its most important folder was encrypted.
The password hint read:
WHAT EVERY CHILD DESERVES AT THE TABLE.
We tried food, dinner, dignity, family, welcome.
Nothing worked.
Beckett solved it while listening from the hallway.
“Seconds.”
The password opened the folder.
Inside were scanned ledgers, emails, and part of a trust agreement.
The signature pages were missing.
The visible sections established that Evelyn had created something benefiting descendants, but without the full document, Edward argued the scans were unfinished drafts.
The court granted a forty-eight-hour temporary pause on the sale.
Not a permanent injunction.
Marguerite retaliated by releasing photographs of the plates I smashed and accusing me of frightening my children.
I enrolled in a parenting course before anyone ordered it.
I wanted the record to show that my justified anger had still produced an unsafe moment.
Then the service-corridor audio arrived.
Marguerite’s voice said:
“Keep the three of them hungry. Once Linnea breaks, Dad files the petition.”
Edward answered:
“And when she is removed?”
Marguerite laughed.
“The shares come back under family control.”
The recording proved the dinner was staged.
It still did not explain what the shares were.

At the end of the file, a third voice asked whether the children might reveal “what Grandma left them.”
The voice belonged to Owen Pike.
