Chapter 25 - PURPLE

Lily avoided purple for years without realizing it.
Nora noticed.
Never mentioned.
At forty-one, Lily’s daughter Maya chose purple rain boots at a store.
Lily froze.
Maya was four.
“Purple!”
Sam looked at Lily.
Only a glance.
He knew the history.
Did not decide.
Maya ran toward her mother.
“Can I get these?”
Lily crouched.
The boots were ordinary.
She touched one.
Rubber.
Soft lining.
Retail tag.
Nothing special.
Her hand shook slightly.
Maya noticed.
“Mom?”
Lily smiled.
“You like them?”
“Yes.”
“Try them on.”
Maya did.
Stomped.
Jumped.
“Look!”
Lily laughed.
“Very fashionable.”
Sam later asked in the car:
“You okay?”
“I was.”
“Was?”
“I am.”
No dramatic breakdown.
No need to buy yellow instead.
Maya wore purple boots through two rainy seasons.
One day filled them with mud deliberately.
Lily complained about the carpet.
That was all.
Color became color.
Boots became boots.
Her daughter never learned the full story at four.
Why would she?
At twelve, Maya asked about an old newspaper article.
Lily told her an age-appropriate version.
“Your grandfather hurt me and used my medical care to steal money from a trust.”
Maya looked horrified.
“Inside shoes?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“When you’re older, if you still want details.”
“Okay.”
