Chapter 20 - NORA

Nora never married while Lily was young.

Not because she sacrificed romance heroically.

Life happened.

Work.

Guardianship.

Therapy appointments.

Then she met Daniel Foster when Lily was seventeen.

He taught high-school chemistry.

He did not try to become Dad.

At dinner, Lily asked:

“Are you going to marry my mom?”

Nora nearly choked.

Daniel said:

“Not tonight.”

They married two years later.

Lily walked Nora down the aisle because she wanted to.

No adoption changes.

No name changes.

Daniel never asked Lily to call him father.

She called him Daniel.

Later:

D.

That was enough.

Nora’s parenting was imperfect.

She overchecked Lily’s shoes.

Overreacted to missed calls.

Once read Lily’s bank notification without permission because she feared fraud.

Lily was nineteen.

They fought.

“You don’t get to surveil me because Dad did bad things.”

Nora cried.

“You’re right.”

She apologized.

Changed.

Important.

Rescue caregivers can become controlling too if fear becomes justification.

Nora had to learn that.

At twenty-four, Lily traveled alone to Europe.

Nora hated it.

Did not stop her.

She texted too much.

Lily muted her for two days.

Relationship survived.

Healthy families can tolerate being ignored.

Greg’s prison release date approached years later.

Nora panicked.

Lily was twenty-six.

“He can’t come here.”

“He has restrictions.”

“What if—”

“Mom.”

Nora stopped.

Lily smiled.

“You did it.”

“What?”

“The fear thing.”

Nora exhaled.

“Sorry.”

“Ask.”

“Do you want security review?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me to contact his parole officer?”

“No. My lawyer can.”

“Good.”

Power translated into choice.

Greg was released under supervision at sixty.

No trust authority.

No access to Lily.

No automatic family return.

He moved to another county.

Worked in warehouse maintenance.

Stayed in alcohol treatment.

His life continued.

May you like

So did hers.

Separate.
