Chapter 19 - LILY AT TWENTY-ONE

Lily studied environmental design.

Not medicine.

Not entomology.

Not trust law.

She liked public parks.

Playgrounds.

Stormwater systems.

Accessible outdoor spaces.

People kept trying to interpret it.

Rain.

Boots.

Environment.

She rolled her eyes.

“I just like designing parks.”

Fair.

At twenty-one she became co-adviser to her own trust.

Not sole trustee.

First Commonwealth remained with an independent co-fiduciary added after reforms.

She could review investments.

Approve certain distributions.

Challenge fees.

Receive reports directly.

First meeting:

“Why is there a line called caregiver reserve?”

Historical category.

She asked them to rename it.

Not erase records.

Rename current reporting:

BENEFICIARY SUPPORT RESERVE.

Approved.

Words mattered.

She also asked whether First Commonwealth could remain trustee after its failure.

Her independent attorney said:

“You can petition to replace it.”

Lily thought for months.

Then kept it with conditions.

Why?

“The people there now didn’t do what the old team did, and the reforms are good.”

No loyalty.

No revenge.

Institutional accountability can include repair.

The trust funded college.

Therapy when she wanted it.

A modest apartment during graduate school.

No luxury influencer lifestyle.

No performative poverty.

She bought yellow rain boots again at twenty-two.

Not because therapy told her to.

Because Seattle rain destroyed her sneakers.

She texted Nora a photo.

Nora replied with twelve crying emojis.

Lily:

Please stop making footwear emotional.

Nora:

Never.

Family.

She still checked the inside before putting them on.

Sometimes.

Less over time.
