Chapter 8 - THE PROXY HEARING

My laptop supported fingerprint login.
Victoria had carried it into the hospital.
She could have pressed my hand against the sensor while I was sedated.
The hospital camera did not show what happened inside the room before visitor tracking began.
The transfer moved money into an escrow account connected to a pending company sale.
It was reversed before closing because Claire notified the bank of my condition.
Marcus claimed he knew nothing about the fingerprint.
Victoria’s messages suggested otherwise but remained ambiguous.
At the guardianship hearing, Marcus described himself as the only parent capable of preserving Leo’s stability.
Claire played the active call.
His voice filled the courtroom:
Your mother is never waking up.
The judge continued Leo’s placement with Claire and ordered supervised therapeutic contact only if Leo agreed.
He did not.
I supported that choice.
Being his mother did not give me the right to force reconciliation with the man who struck him.
My own capacity remained contested.
An independent guardian was appointed only for disputed corporate transactions, not personal decisions.
That limited Marcus’s ability to portray me as completely incompetent.
I was angry at the restriction.
Then I remembered the blank document I had once signed without reading every future use.
Oversight was not always an insult.
Sometimes it was the structure trust should have had from the beginning.
Leo visited me each afternoon.
He brought homework, comic books, and questions no child should need.
“Were you pretending the whole time?”
“I could hear.”
“Did it hurt when Dad said you wouldn’t wake up?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you open your eyes?”
“Because I didn’t know what he would do.”
Leo looked down.
“I knew.”
That sentence broke something in me.
My son had understood the danger before I admitted it.
Before leaving, he removed a folded paper from his shoe.
“I hid this when Dad searched my backpack.”
It was a handwritten list in my own writing.
Dock 14.
Friday.
Second audit.
Call Claire before Marcus sees it.
May you like
I had written the instructions before my collapse.
I still could not remember what waited at Dock 14.
