Chapter 6 - THE STATEMENT LEO REFUSED TO SIGN
Marcus’s lawyer delivered a written statement for Leo.
It said he misunderstood an argument, entered my room without permission, and fell when Marcus tried to take the phone.
Leo refused to sign.
“He hit me because I knew Mom was awake.”
The lawyer withdrew the paper after Claire photographed it.
The attempt became relevant to witness tampering, though prosecutors did not charge it immediately.
My company board placed Marcus on temporary leave from his role as chief operating officer.
Victoria resigned as financial strategy director before they could suspend her.
The board also removed me from active voting until two independent physicians confirmed my capacity.
That was lawful.
It still gave Marcus’s allies time.
I gave my first recorded statement from the hospital.
My voice failed often.
I remembered meeting Marcus and Victoria in our basement office the night I was injured.
They were arguing about an audit.
Marcus told me I had misunderstood ordinary vendor payments.
Victoria asked whether I had contacted Claire.
I said yes.
Then Marcus offered tea.
After drinking it, my hands became heavy.
I tried to reach the stairs.
Victoria blocked me.
Marcus caught my arm.
I remembered the edge of a glass against my cheek.
Then the floor.
I could not remember who struck me.
I could not remember how the authorization reached the hospital.
A victim’s memory did not become complete because the truth needed it.
Detective Hayes compared my account with physical evidence.
The tea residue supported sedation.
The blood beneath the stair runner supported injury.
It did not identify the exact person who delivered either act.
Leo then remembered visiting our office the previous afternoon.
Victoria had placed drops into a dark glass bottle.
“She said it was for Mom’s nerves.”
He saw Marcus watching.
That evening the hospital received an anonymous report accusing Dr. Park of administering the unprescribed sedative.
The attached medication log carried her electronic signature.
She had been in surgery at the recorded time.
