Lenora lived to eighty-three.
Age softened some things.
Not everything.
She still believed formal dinners required cloth napkins.
Still corrected people’s grammar.
Still thought casual shoes were societal decline.
People remain themselves.
Her relationship with Hollis improved modestly.
With Fletcher:
cards.
One short phone call when she was ill.
He chose it.
No forced deathbed reconciliation.
Lenora died from heart failure.
No mystery.
No hidden poisoning.
No final conspiracy.
Her estate paid remaining restitution obligations first.
Then lawful assets distributed.
Fletcher received:
Thomas Sutton’s old fountain pen.
A silver serving spoon.
And a note.
The note said:
You were hungry because I wanted obedience from someone else. I am ashamed that this is part of what you remember about me.
Fletcher read it.
Kept the fountain pen.
Donated the serving spoon.
Shredded the note months later.
