Chapter 17 - MARIBEL SUTTON BECOMES MARIBEL REYES AGAIN

I kept Sutton during the divorce for six months.

Paperwork.

Fletcher.

Clients knew me professionally by the name.

Then one morning I looked at my studio door:

MARIBEL SUTTON DESIGN.

It felt borrowed.

Not poisoned.

Borrowed.

My maiden name was Reyes.

I changed it back.

Maribel Reyes.

Fletcher remained Sutton.

He asked:

“Why different?”

“Because people can have different last names and still be family.”

“Will you change mine?”

“Only if you ever want to discuss that when you’re older.”

He didn’t.

Good.

No need to make a child’s surname a loyalty referendum.

My studio grew.

Hospitality interiors.

Senior-living spaces.

Restaurants.

I refused Sutton Hospitality work for years.

Not because I could never enter a Sutton building.

Because procurement needed distance.

At forty, I allowed my firm to compete for one Sutton restaurant renovation through an independent bid process.

We lost.

I laughed for an hour.

Healthy governance is terrible for ego.

Two years later we won a different project.

Fairly.

No symbolic reunion.

Work.

I dated eventually.

Slowly.

At thirty-eight I married Noah Grant, an architect who knew nothing about Sutton trusts when we met and remained almost aggressively uninterested in them afterward.

Fletcher called him Noah.

Later:

Bonus Dad, once, jokingly.

No replacement-father story.

Hollis remained Fletcher’s father.

May you like

Complex family.

Real.
