Chapter 22 - THE GRADUATION VIDEO

June was twelve when she found my graduation-party video.
Not the full assault footage.
A news archive clip.
Mom slapping me.
Cake.
Caleb catching me.
Blurred police footage later.
She came downstairs.
“Grandma hit you?”
I looked at Caleb.
Then at June.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She was scared and angry about something she thought my engagement would cause.”
“That’s stupid.”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop talking to her?”
“For years.”
“But now she comes Thanksgiving.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she changed enough and I wanted some relationship.”
“Did you forgive her?”
I smiled.
“People really love that question.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Nothing. It’s just not the only question.”
“Did you?”
“Some parts.”
She hated that answer.
At twelve, binary categories are merciful.
I explained the rest gradually.
Ring.
Family money.
Pension.
Grandma Margaret.
Not all at once.
No child should inherit a spreadsheet because curiosity opened a browser.
June asked:
“Did Caleb marry you because you got rich?”
He looked offended.
“I proposed before we knew.”
“Good planning.”
“Thank you?”
She grinned.
May you like
Normal skepticism.
Healthy.
