Chapter 21 - THE RING GOES INTO A DRAWER

I stopped wearing Margaret’s ring at thirty-two.

Not because of trauma.

Because the band became thin.

The jeweler recommended restoration.

I hesitated.

Then laughed at myself.

Jewelry can be repaired.

We documented the crest.

Preserved provenance.

Reset my diamond into a stronger band.

The old Margaret band went into a safe.

The chipped sapphire remained in archival custody until the pension cases fully closed.

Eventually it returned to the Vale trust.

Olivia and I decided neither of us wanted it personally.

We donated the sapphire and old band—not to a museum display of scandal—but to a university archive studying financial governance and documentary authentication.

With context.

No giant photograph of my bruised face.

No party video.

The object’s story belonged to systems.

My engagement belonged to Caleb.

He bought me a plain anniversary ring at thirty-five.

Cost nine hundred dollars.

I loved it.

“Downgrade,” he said.

“Upgrade in emotional compliance.”

May you like

“Romantic.”

We laughed.
