Chapter 19 - VIVIAN MEETS CALEB AGAIN

I was twenty-seven when I invited Mom to coffee.

Five years after the slap.

She arrived early.

No pearls.

No heels.

Simple navy sweater.

She stared at my ring.

Then caught herself and looked at my face.

Progress.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

We sat.

For twenty minutes, we discussed weather.

Probation ended.

Work.

Her therapy practice? No—she had begun volunteering at a literacy program.

Then:

“How is Caleb?”

“Good.”

“I owe him an apology.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me to?”

“That’s between you and him if he accepts contact.”

Good boundaries can sound bureaucratic.

They work.

Caleb agreed to one meeting later.

Mom told him:

“I treated your proposal as an attack because I believed marriage would activate legal control.”

Caleb said:

“You could’ve asked.”

“Yes.”

“You could’ve asked Emma.”

“Yes.”

“You hit her.”

“Yes.”

No speech.

Then Mom apologized for blaming him while I was unconscious.

He accepted the apology.

Not trust.

Different.

Over years, Vivian returned to our life slowly.

Holidays with conditions.

No financial discussions unless invited.

No criticizing adult decisions as permission issues.

If she crossed a line, we ended the visit.

Twice we did.

The third time, she corrected herself.

Change is often repetitive.
