Chapter 24 - ELEANOR WITHOUT AUTHORITY

Eleanor met Lily at a botanical garden.

Public.

Neutral.

No therapist required now.

Lily was thirty.

I waited at a café across the grounds because Lily asked.

Eleanor walked slowly.

Cane.

Same blue eyes Hannah had.

Lily later told me the conversation.

Eleanor said:

“You look like your mother.”

Lily answered:

“I look like me.”

Good start.

They sat.

Lily asked:

“Did losing control fix you?”

Eleanor laughed sadly.

“No. It removed my ability to keep avoiding myself.”

Then:

“I thought your father would take you away from Hannah’s memory.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Then what did?”

“I did. Every time I used Hannah to make you obey, I turned her into something frightening.”

That was perhaps the hardest truth Eleanor ever said.

Lily asked:

“Do you still think Dad is dangerous?”

Eleanor thought.

“He can be intimidating.”

Fair.

“Dangerous to me?”

“No.”

“Why did it take court for you to admit that?”

“Because admitting it meant Tessa and I were wrong.”

Pride.

Again.

They walked for forty minutes.

No hug until the end.

Eleanor asked.

Lily said yes.

One.

Small.

Their relationship afterward became occasional.

Lunch twice a year.

Birthday calls.

No reclaimed matriarchy.

No “family back together.”

Martin remained more distant.

His health declined.

Lily visited once before he died.

Not because she forgave fully.

Because she wanted no unanswered question.

He died at eighty-six from heart failure.

Ordinary death.

No mystery.

Eleanor died two years later.

Lily attended both funerals.

Tessa attended under conditions.

No confrontation.

May you like

No reconciliation scene.

People can share grief without solving history.
